Restructuring of Parc Lescure – Chaban Delmas Stadium in Bordeaux
The Lescure Sports Park, which includes the Chaban Delmas Stadium (a historic large stadium built in 1938), is located in the heart of Bordeaux, along the boulevards. The main challenge of its restructuring was to create a new neighborhood open to the city, centered around the iconic, fully renovated Bordeaux stadium, and a redesigned sports field envisioned as a Metropolitan garden.
The starting point was the conviction that the stadium, in its entirety, and the sports field should be preserved for their use and for their potential in creating a sports garden. We removed the stadium’s perimeter fence to transform it into a true urban stadium with facades directly facing the public space. We removed the upper stands in the corners to create spaces beneath the roofs and relocated the sports annexes from Rue Albert Thomas, as they were built on the only area of the site that could be densified.
Lescure Stadium, a high-level professional sports venue
The stadium is a key element of the Lescure site. Built in 1938, it is a testament to the architectural style of the 1930s and is listed as “20th-century heritage.” Its remarkable features include the concrete vaulted crown, which gives it its identity and elegance, and the continuous, rotating stands surrounding the pitch. Within the preserved integrity of the stadium, we have created wide access points and kiosks, new suites, and a large reception hall. We then extended the idea of the urban stadium further by introducing new uses: shops and offices in the north corner, retail spaces on the ground floor of the main stand, a large sports-related sign, and an area for a market in the south corner. The stadium has been modified to a capacity of 25,000 seats. The continuity of the vaulted crown and the arena creates the welcoming atmosphere we know today. To preserve this characteristic, we retained the lower stands in the corners.
Lescure Passage
On the boulevard side, we have envisioned a romantic commercial concept called “Le Passage Lescure.” This open-air passage is designed as a true architectural curiosity, guiding visitors between the 1930s architecture of the stadium and new contemporary shops. At the base of the stadium, which will soon be occupied by shops, new ground-floor buildings will house additional commercial spaces. Thus, contemporary architecture engages in dialogue with the stadium’s Art Deco architecture, with a sober and elegant design.
Sports Field
Above, we reinvent a true tree-lined sports field, continuing from the Béchade field. Between the two existing frontons, all the sports activities previously located on Rue Albert Thomas will be relocated, along with a restaurant in the volume of the small gymnasium.
Housing
The transformation of Parc Lescure into a real urban neighborhood requires the addition of housing. Three types will be built: for ownership, for seniors, and for students/young professionals. The ownership and senior housing will be located on Rue Albert Thomas. Their design is based on a coherent relationship with the volumes of the neighboring buildings. They will be housed within terraced buildings separated by gardens. These buildings share a common architectural language, guided by volumetric unity, generous openings, and meticulous work on the facades. The student/young professional housing will be located on the southwest part of the plot. The residence will have six floors. Each apartment will feature an outdoor space.
