Renardières Sports Complex
Courbevoie, France
Project contentProject description
Located at the heart of the Grand Paris metropolis, the new gymnasium places Sports at the forefront of the dense and multifunctional urban landscape of La Défense. This ambitious project, positioned at the intersection of social and urban challenges, directly enhances the quality of life for city residents.
Urban Integration
Situated in Courbevoie as part of the Seine-Europe urban development project, the design leverages the site’s constraints to create a unique sports facility. Perched above a parking structure, with a limited footprint and surrounded by high-rise buildings and an access bridge to the La Défense esplanade, the complex explore new possibilities in sport architectural design. Organized across four levels, the inclusive gymnasium provides an innovative, accessible solution :
- Level 0 : Dance studios, Dojo, Table tennis room.
- Level 1 : Sports field of the Large Multi-sports Hall.
- Level 2 : Public seating above Changing rooms, Clubhouse
- Level 3 : Partial technical/staff area.
A kind of LEGO construction, connected by a four levels hall, forming the backbone of the project.
Innovative design: A Central Role for Sports in the Grand Paris Metropolis and Public Experience
Through its carefully interwoven volumes and thoughtful urban openings, the project strengthens the connection between the sports complex and the city:
- Main facade: The Dance Studios and Multi-sports Hall open generously onto
Avenue Général Audran, inviting the public to engage with sports activities. - North side: The Dojo and Multi-sports Hall seamlessly integrate with a treelined promenade, providing a natural respite in the dense urban environment.
The gymnasium becomes a living showcase of inclusive sports, animating the neighborhood and sparking curiosity with its transparency and interaction with public spaces.
A Bioclimatic and Sustainable Architecture
Compact and efficient, the project embodies bioclimatic principles and uses natural, biosourced materials. Its hybrid low-carbon timber/concrete structure and brick facades reflect a strong commitment to sustainability:
- Main facade : A suspended brick moucharabieh creates subtle transparencies, offering elegant light effects and a striking nocturnal presence in this 24/7 neighborhood.
- Green roof : Visible from surrounding towers, it hosts beehives to support biodiversity and features three north-facing sheds, ensuring glare-free naturallighting for athletes. The south-facing surfaces are equipped with photovoltaicpanels.
- Interiors : Constructed with glulam spruce beams and finished with wooden acoustic panels, the spaces combine aesthetic appeal with high performance.
This design ensures strong thermal inertia, excellent natural lighting (300 lux in all activity areas), and dual-flow ventilation supplemented by natural cross ventilation. Connected to the urban energy network and augmented with photovoltaic energy production, the facility achieves exemplary energy efficiency.
Impact: A Visionary Project for Emerging Values
This creative complex positions Sports as a pillar of urban transformation in Europe’s second-largest business district. By championing accessibility, sustainability, and community engagement, it sets a new standard for integrating athletics into metropolitan life.
